Hallmark Channel’s Favorite Character Names

A weekend binge session gave me an idea.

On the way home from work today a crazy idea for a blog post popped into my head. What’s even crazier is my drive is only four minutes. So, naturally, there isn’t much “mulling over blog post or story plots” time. This afternoon’s drive was an exception.

As it happens, I’m attempting to put surnames to my two MCs for a work in progress, and it got me thinking about which names are most popular in television and the like. You know what I realized? The Hallmark Channel writers – whomever they may be – really love repeating names in their films and tv shows. Example: they used Abigail for both Good Witch (which, coincidentally, I just finished watching again) and When Calls the Heart.

Today, let’s take a look at the character names of 107 of the most recent Hallmark films from 2020 and 2021, plus their top twenty premiers of all time. Here are the stats:

Honestly? I was ready to roast Hallmark for their name choices.

— Have you ever been stymied by naming a certain character in your new manuscript? That’s the stage I’m at with my current story. At the rate Hallmark’s films are produced, I can’t imagine the pool of scripts they have to pick their next season’s films from. And how do they manage to keep track of all those character names? Just with two years’ worth of films alone, I came up with the above list of 535 names (excluding secondary cast members. Of those names, here are Hallmark Channel’s most popular ones:

“Hating on a certain name only gives them fame.”

After seeing so many characters named “Abigail” or “Nick” or “Jack,” these ones came as a surprise. As much as I love the name “Jack,” I try to not name anyone that due to how often it’s used. Here are some of my favorite Jacks:

Despite what the above quote says, I don’t hate the name Jack.

In fact, I quite like Jack. But now we’ve reached the summary, or “TL;DR” section of this blog post. While there are many repeats in Hallmark’s films overall, many of the secondary characters are the ones who own them. While I may already know and love the names of the leads in my newest WIP, I’m stuck on all the secondary characters. Typical, right? Some of you might think I’m spending way too much time on such details, but no way do I want to end up with seven Maggies, seven Kates, six Toms or four Noahs.

What about your writing journey? Do you have an easier time naming your main characters or your secondaries?
